This Is Why Chimps Are Stronger Than Humans

…biologists have uncovered differences in muscle architecture between chimpanzees and humans. But evolutionary biologist Alan Walker, a professor at Penn State University, thinks muscles may only be part of the story.

In an article published in the April issue of Current Anthropology, Walker argues that humans may lack the strength of chimps because our nervous systems exert more control over our muscles. Our fine motor control prevents great feats of strength, but allows us to perform delicate and uniquely human tasks.

Walker’s hypothesis stems partly from a finding by primatologist Ann MacLarnon. MacLarnon showed that, relative to body mass, chimps have much less grey matter in their spinal cords than humans have. Spinal grey matter contains large numbers of motor neurons—nerves cells that connect to muscle fibers and regulate muscle movement.

More grey matter in humans means more motor neurons, Walker proposes. And having more motor neurons means more muscle control.

Our surplus motor neurons allow us to engage smaller portions of our muscles at any given time. We can engage just a few muscle fibers for delicate tasks like threading a needle, and progressively more for tasks that require more force. Conversely, since chimps have fewer motor neurons, each neuron triggers a higher number of muscle fibers. So using a muscle becomes more of an all-or-nothing proposition for chimps. As a result, chimps often end up using more muscle than they need.

“[A]nd that is the reason apes seem so strong relative to humans,” Walker writes.

The “Terrifying” Fish That Spawned Legends

This is the oarfish [wikipedia] is a long bony fish that is rarely seen alive, and presumably the source of many ancient legends such as the sea serpent and the Holy Mother of God, Monster!

In this awesome video, a  bunch of humans managed not only to capture it, but also to turn it into tasty stew afterwards. So much fun eating something rare!

A Primate’s Spontaneous Whistling Got Scientists’ Panties In A Twist

Bonnie, a 30-year old female orangutan living at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington D.C., began whistling on hearing the sound made by her care-taker. This caught scientists’ attention because it was long argued that orangutans have no voluntary control over their vocals and that their sounds are purely emotional – more like a response to stimuli like predators.

In previous studies it was indicated that orangutans and chimpanzees are capable of species-atypical sounds and vocalizations but only under strong influence of human training. However, this was the first time ever that Bonnie, an orangutan without any explicit human training mimicked the sound of whistle.

The World’s Only “Truly Immortal” Animal

Turritopsis nutricula is a hydrozoan with a life cycle in which it reverts to the polyp stage after becoming sexually mature. It is the only known case of a metazoan capable of reverting completely to a sexually immature, colonial stage after having reached sexual maturity as a solitary stage (Piraino et al. 1996, p. 302). It does this through the cell development process of transdifferentiation. Theoretically, this cycle can repeat indefinitely, rendering it effectively immortal.

{Image: the Turritopsis nutricula‘s life cycle, which shows how it is able to live indefinitely through an endless loop of renewal. WTF!}

Rat King

Rat kings are phenomena said to arise when a number of rats become intertwined at their tails, which become stuck together with blood, dirt, and excrement. The animals reputedly grow together while joined at the tails. The numbers of rats that are joined together can vary, but naturally rat kings formed from a larger number of rats are rarer. The phenomenon is particularly associated with Germany, where the majority of instances have been reported.

Most authors presume the creatures are legendary and that all supposed physical evidence is hoaxed, such as mummified groups of dead rats with their tails tied together. Reports of living specimens remain unsubstantiated. No known scientific study has been performed on this topic yet.

How To Embed A Real Live Puppy In Your Car’s Grill

Marco Menozzi hit this one-year-old pooch somewhere in Italy at 70 mph, but instead of the usual puppy-flies-and-magically-transforms-into-roadkill consequence, it actually got embedded in the grill and clung on until the car stopped 15 miles later. That’s a story Marco will from now on use to hit chicks at singles bars. Until he chances on a card-bearing hottie from PETA.
