I thought the Japanese are workaholics. This man just proved me wrong.

A senior official at the Kurashiki Municipal Government, who worked only 26 days in about five years, will be dismissed at the end of this year, officials have said.

The 48-year-old public servant, whose name is being withheld, was absent from work for almost the entire period between fiscal 2001 and 2005 by using his paid leave, other paid days off and by taking sick leave for a psychosomatic disease.

During that period, the senior official received some 26 million yen in salary and bonuses, officials of the municipal government said. His dismissal takes effect on Dec. 31.
