Natalie Merchant’s 2001 album Motherland was supposed to be adorned by these images of cute kids with gas masks and oxygen tanks. But darn that 9/11, making the said images suddenly “too upsetting,” what you ended up seeing was Natalie under an apple tree. Well, enough time and perspective have made haunting things a-okay again, so here they are, as Natalie serenades you with one of the album’s tracks. Never mind that vague, itchy sense of kidsploitation you can’t scratch, anyway.
