Finland’s Soap Gives Viewers The Upper Hand
Filed under: TV
In Helsinki, viewers of the newly-launched soap opera Sydan kierroksella (Heart Goes Round) are allowed to “control” the plot’s twists and turns through text messaging. The soap opera is about the revolting love affair (okay, I’ll change the word “revolting” when I’m in a nicer mood) between teen idol Roope and a sixty-something lady named Juulia.
It seems if you have some crazy idea, like if you want to see an old lady have sex with a boy in an outhouse, you can send your desire directly via text. Maybe you can have Juulia wear nothing but fig leaves as she strolls around the city whimpering, “Oh, Roope!” Or maybe have Jack Nicholson materialize in her bedroom to eat her out. Disgusting. But, well, the viewer is king.
