The Incredible Vanishing Pay Phones

CBS reports that there are more and more empty street corners where pay phones used to be.

Nationwide, the number of pay phones has dropped by half, to approximately 1 million, over the last nine years, according to an estimate by the American Public Communications Council, a trade association for independent pay phone operators.

I’m not intrigue about vanishing pay phones. What got me thinking is the clue that there is an association for pay phone operators. Sounds like a blast of a party. Could they be related somehow with the hyper-exciting association for chartered accountants and undertakers? I wonder what they do on Friday nights. Maybe they ring up one another, unload their baskets of throbbing nerve endings, trade little melodies composed entirely around dial tones, and plot the next, well, Friday night?
