Google: And Free Cellphones For All…

Google Inc.’s chief executive, Eric Schmidt, believes mobile phones should be given free to consumers, as long as they agree to accept targeted forms of advertisements on the phones.

Schmidt said Saturday that as mobile phones become more like handheld computers and consumers spend as much as eight to 10 hours a day talking, texting and using the Web on these devices, advertising becomes a viable form of subsidy.

It would have been a great assurance and for a minute there, I really thought Google was serious about giving away cellphones, in the same way it tapped some free things. But Schmidt later made it clear his company actually has no plans to directly give away phones itself. It’s very tragic in an odd, shitty way to talk about things you won’t back up, anyway. So Schmidt, you’re a nice fellow, but you’d be much nicer if you’d actually convince your friends to take the Free Cellphones For All masterplan seriously.
