The Liquid That Stops Bullets

This is called shear thickening fluid (STF), made possible by advanced nanotechnology and something called polyethylene glycol — the same nontoxic thickening agent used in common products like ice cream. What makes this new product exciting is it can be used in many armor applications: from body armor for law enforement officials to protective clothing for motorcyclists.
“Under active development for the past five years, STFs are special materials with nano-particles that exhibit properties normally associated with both solids and liquids, but are rarely found in the same material. Sometimes referred to as “liquid armor,” the material is actually a nanotechnology that exists in a flexible, fluid-like state under normal conditions but adopts seemingly rigid qualities and becomes less penetrable when impacted.
As a result, this special material can be applied to conventional ballistic fabrics or other materials used in armor applications, allowing them to remain flexible under normal wear, but simultaneously becoming resistant to penetration when impacted by a spike, knife or high velocity projectile or fragment. STF treated fabrics effectively spread the energy over a larger area.”
The cool thing about STF is that they remain liquid under normal conditions — until , say, somebody shoots you. The impact of a knife stab or a bullet makes it suddenly rigid and impenetrable. It then goes back to liquid when the “shooting” stops. A t-shirt or jacket with the print, “I eat Catholic babies” and soaked in STF can be a nice addition to your hardcore gangsta get-up and bling. Oh, they can be used by the police, too.
