Shuji Nakamura, the “Laser Guy,” Bags the Millenium Technology Prize
Filed under: Technology
The Japanese guy who’s responsible for making our computers and telecommunications devices rely on the many ways of manipulating light in sending, storing, and processing information just won the Millenium Technology Prize, along with a cool EUR$1,000,000.
All things equal, Shuji Nakamura’s achievements may be unconveniently summed up in two words: blue laser. The world thanks him for it.
“This [blue laser source] has a shorter wavelength than its infrared and red equivalent (the common light sources used in today’s standard DVD and CD players, for example), and so it represents a big step forward in storage capacity.
Going from infrared to blue quadruples the amount of data that can be stored in a given area.
Currently, companies such as Sony, Toshiba and Samsung are exploiting Professor Nakamura’s invention in the next generation of DVD players, which promise better sound and high-definition pictures.”
