Garments That “Feel”
Philips Design has rolled out two prototypes of its “emotional garment” — special clothing that glows and reacts depending on what the wearer feels.
Bubelle, the “blushing dress” comprises two layers, the inner one is equipped with sensors that respond to changes in the wearer’s emotions and projects them onto the outer textile. It behaves differently depending on who is wearing it. The other prototype is Frison, a body suit that reacts to being blown on by igniting a private constellation of tiny LEDs. Both measure skin signals and change light emission through biometric sensing technology.
I understand people’s need to “wear” their emotion for the eyeballs of every Tom, Dick, and Harry. But I wonder how you’d hide with your usual shit-eating, No It’s Not You, It’s Me grin after your truly nonexploitative boss serves you a fresh round of tasty bullshit that sends you glowing literally red. Or, say, that hot piece of ass from Marketing floats toward your favorite watercooler hangout, and suddenly your shirt flashes with the universal color of utter and unstoppable horniness. Might she actually bend over and respond to your “mating” signals?
