After 20 years of marriage, a 50-year-old Chinese farmer from Damintun Town in Liaoning Province one day told his wife his one ardent wish to make his life meaningful: “I want to be a girl.”

So kind people went out of their way to give him what he wants — for free.

He had two hours of facial surgery at the Xinglin cosmetic hospital yesterday morning.

“This is his first operation. We adjusted the outline of his face to make it more tender and beautiful like a woman’s,” said Liu Jianbo, the chief surgeon. “I have never met a 50-year-old man who wanted to have a sex-change operation.”

The man’s wife, who also was not identified, said she had often quarreled with Chen about his sexual indifference toward her, several years after they got married. The farmer finally told his wife that his only wish was to become a woman.
