Cate Blanchett Solves the Bob Dylan Problem
Filed under: Strange Celebrities
We’ve always known, thanks to a smattering of tragically hilarious/vicarious experience, that Bob Dylan is the last person on earth any rookie, impressionable reporter would want to interview. Louis Menand says, “The trouble with Elvis was that he had very little to say; he was mainly concerned about sounding polite. Dylan is rarely concerned about sounding polite, and he says things, but he sometimes makes them up. He also contradicts himself, answers questions with questions, rambles, gets hostile, goes laconic, and generally bewilders.”
Dylan’s the guy who sometimes reminds me of that Andrew Kevin Walker line in BMW’s The Hire: he’s one of those people who are so beautiful in one thing, and such jerks in another.
So I guess the fact that Cate Blanchett is one of the actors playing Bob Dylan in an upcoming biopic leaves me giggling like crazy in the dark. No one knows yet what Dylan is thinking about the whole thing. It’s a stretch to imagine Dylan asking the same for-Guthrie question, “So this is the game?” Yes, Bob. It must be the game. You can now go back to your croaking.
