Mummified Mexican Babies To Kill Your Appetite
Filed under: Strange Artifacts
When somebody said America is the fattest country in the world, our hearts bled. So we believe we’ve just found one effective slimming aid: lose much of the desire to eat just by looking at these blood-curdling photos of dead Mexican infants (click to enlarge for maximum efficacy), courtesy of our friends from the poor Mexican town of Guanajuato, who unwittingly enlightened us by simply dying copiously of poverty amid a very arid climate.
In the Mexican town of Guanajuato during the years 1896 and 1958 a taxation was imposed on burials, of 20 pesos annually, or 170 pesos for permanent burial. Many families could not afford this fee, thus large numbers of corpses were exhumed, presumably destined for an ossuary. But the qualities of the arid air perhaps interacting with soil conditions yielded a peculiar phenomenon, the desiccation instead of decomposition of the bodies.
Some more “slimming” photos after the jump.
