Toyota’s “DJ Robot” Quits Music Band, Prefers A Job Even Humans Avoid

Perhaps Toyota intentionally wired its musically inclined robot to actually like putting up with people’s shit, because it turns out the once-glamorous DJ Robot is now shifting to a career as a receptionist.

DJ Robot was once one of the stars at the 2005 Aichi World Expo as a member of Toyota’s Partner Robots, which consisted of “a show-stopping bipedal android trumpet player and an ensemble of wheeled bots playing tuba, trombone, French horn and percussion.”

To sum up DJ Robot’s new career path:

DJ Robot’s first gig will come at the end of August when it goes to work alongside human receptionists at the Toyota Kaikan Exhibition Hall at company headquarters in Toyota City, which sees more than 400,000 visitors per year.

In January 2008, the droid will begin working at Toyota’s Nagoya office on the 24th floor of Midland Square, an office and shopping complex at Nagoya station, while additional versions of the robot will be rolled out at other company facilities at later dates. Toyota has yet to announce whether DJ Robot will be changing its name to better suit its new role as receptionist.

Music star to receptionist? Something tells us that makes the robot pretty fucked — if only it had feelings and the ability to see shit as it really is.
