In Kenya, Huge Hips Are The New Huge Boobs

Men’s preference for bigger and more attractive hips in Kisumu has forced beauticians in the lakeside city to be more creative to satisfy the demand. The beauticians have come up with artificial hips, which are fitted on women keen to enhance their backsides.

The artificial-hips craze has turned the hitherto dull and unprofitable beauty business into a goldmine.

Florence Atieno, 23, is a pioneer ‘hip maker’ who is reaping the benefits of this craze.

Inside her small beauty shop in Kisumu, she works on her second hip for the day with the concentration and dexterity of a sculptor.

“I help slim ladies get bigger and well curved hips,” says Atieno.

She is regarded as a ‘saviour’ by women who are not very well endowed in the ‘right places’ with her remedy.

“Kisumu has its share of pretty women but some of them are very slender and most of the time pass unnoticed,” says Atieno.

Her tools of trade include a pair of skin-tight clothing (bikers), foam mattress and cotton fabric.

The foam mattress is measured to size and fixed at the sides of the biker, the appropriate measurement often a quarter inch. It is then covered by the cotton material and rendered fit for use.

Young women between 18-23 years are now flocking the Hamilton House Oginga Street looking for Maypol Fashion and Beauty Parlour.

Most of them prefer to call her outside where they negotiate in whispers before the deal is struck.

Ready-made shape boosters (not their original name) go for as much as Sh250.
