Antidepressants Approved For Problem Dogs
Filed under: Intriguing Animals, Strange Behavior

Howling dogs doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re seeing scary stuff that we humans don’t. But they could be going through those freaky times that some of us sometimes suffer.
Man’s best friend may have a new best friend after Eli Lilly and Co. won U.S. approval to sell its former blockbuster antidepressant Prozac to treat misbehaving mutts.
The drug, repackaged into a chewable, beef-flavored tablet to be called Reconcile, was officially approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of separation anxiety in dogs in conjunction with behavior modification training, the drug maker said on Wednesday.
Lilly research shows that 10.7 million, or up to 17 percent of U.S. dogs suffer from separation anxiety. Canine separation anxiety can occur when dogs are left alone and manifests itself in a range of undesirable behaviors, such as destruction, excess barking, eating disorders or urinating or defecating in the house.
Hmmm. Prozac may be the right drug for them. It worked for a few psychopaths in the military, and arf-arfers in political session halls. It was used by many models with eating disorders. Alcoholic dads who frequently wet the matrimonial bed chose it as an alternative. And defecating spinster aunties thought of it as a cure to avoid further embarassment.
Jonathan Davis would be so happy to hear these good tidings.
