Evil Catholic African Nun Gets 30 Years
Yes, I find it so appealing that African Catholic nun Theophister Mukabibi is going to spend the next 30 years doing what nuns love most — which is staying inside four concrete walls and looking up at the light streaming through some small window. She’s getting the nice treatment after a traditional gacaca court found her guilty of helping Hutu militiamen to slaughter ethnic Tutsis during the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.
I have no idea what a “gacaca court” is, neither do I have the flawless facility to distinguish between a half-starved Hutu from an equally half-starved Tutsi, but I can understand that what Mukakibibi did was something very bad. But I’m not really sure; is it really bad that hundreds of people died because you threw them out of your hospital to machete-wielding crazies? Is it?
“She was responsible for selecting Tutsis and would throw them out of the hospital and the militia would then kill them,” said Jean Baptiste Ndahumba, president of the local gacaca court in Butare town. “This nun was organizing people to be killed.” She was jailed Thursday.
She would also hold regular meetings with Hutu extremist groups and denied food to Tutsis hiding in the hospital, he said by telephone. About 20 people testified against her, he added.
In the massacre, 100,000 people were killed in the southeastern prefecture of Butare.
