Bollywood Remakes ‘Casablanca’
Bollywood director Rajeev Nath’s new movie, Ezham Mudra (literally The Seventh Seal) is actually a remake of the 1942 Hollywood film Casablanca. Nath says it’s not only a huge tribute to the original film, he’s also doing the premiere right in the city of Casablanca to distract from the fact that it’s probably a comedy.
The Bogart role is taken by Malayalam star Suresh Gopi, and the ravishing Ingrid Bergman part will be in the hands of the equally ravishing Bollywood siren Mandira Bedi (right). So they’re not exactly rounding up the usual suspects.
But will the Asian stars match up to Bogie and Bergman? Impossible, say true Casablanca fans. And the two new kids on the set must surely feel the shades of their predecessors peeping over their shoulders with cool detachment.
